I am struggling with the blue bottle. So worked to just get the area covered.

End of the day's progress. Cleaned up the blue bottle a bit. Still needs work, but will concentrate on covering the whole canvas first.

Started class with Al Staszesky at the Delaware Art Museum today.

The class starts half an hour later than it used to. So I thought it might be enough extra time so I felt I could get up in time. Took about 2 hours to get there this morning, but by the time I get to the other side of New Jersey, school has started and by the time I get on I-95, most people have gotten to work.

I chose this still life set up from the four Al had set up because of the colors and it looked like several options for composition.

It has been a while since I have painted still lifes or in this style, tho I have tried to adapt it in my plein air painting.

Looking forward to going back next week.

Decided to try some more plein air with my iPad.
We went to the Wagon Box Ranch in Dubois, WY during the Susan K Black workshop. It was pretty cold that morning, so I settled in in behind a standing wagon to block the sun. I used the Brushes application with a stylus.

As mentioned previously, I entered my two cissing stencil pieces in the exhibit at the Susan K Black workshop in Dubois, WY.

I will admit that I thought my pieces might get noticed. After all, they werent traditional looking and my technique was different. But I did not expect to be chosen for 2nd place in the acrylics division.

But even more unexpected was to have one of the judges, Everett Raymond Kinstler, buy it! This painter of presidents and celebrities, started his career as a cartoonist and illustrator and thought it was charming. Plans to hang it in his studio to remind himself to have fun with art. Wow. I am honored.

Earthquake tremor in New Jersey

Felt the earthquake today. Was on Long Beach Island in Gallery 1603 in Surf City and the floor started moving and hanging items started swinging back and forth. Really weird feeling. But everything is okay. Funny, but not long before that I was down in Harvey Cedars (on the island) and heard dogs barking and thought that was a bit unusual. Guess they must have known.

iPad Plein Air

I got an iPad2 last week. Havent been out plein air painting all summer long and finally went out with the Pine Shores group yesterday. I thought I would give the iPad a try doing some plein air painting.

I set it up on a sketch easel so I could get a view of something as there was a railing along the walk at the edge of the bay. We went to the park at the end of 4th street in Ship Bottom on Long Beach Islan.

There was maybe a half dozen of us out there painting and they all wanted to come and see how the iPad worked. So pretty much just ended up doing a quick sketch.

One of the issues was being able to see the screen in the outdoor light. Because I had it on an easel, it was hard to adjust. So I just kind of guessed at the colors I was choosing for the brush on the color wheel, but could choose lights and darks.

Going to bring it along again next week.

Was in Atlantic City for a business workshop the other day. Decided to check out the casino area -- no, didnt go gamble. But parked in the public parking lot across from the Trump Plaza. This is not the Plaza itself. We were off the boardwalk a few blocks. This is their parking structure. There are designer-etc outlet shops across from the casino area. Got a cute pair of Aerosoles on sale for $16.

Well, finally. Got device from Dazzle so we could transfer the VHS tape to DVD. Then had to edit using an editing software- Pinnacle -- Still havent figure out how to put these two segments together. But for now, here they are-- over 4 years since filming and nearly a year since it finally aired on TV.

Yes, I want to cringe. And I hear a lisp every now and then. Memories of speech therapy in 3rd grade come to mind. I made a mistake on just about every line and had to repeat a couple of times.

They came really early (about 6 AM) and of course I couldnt sleep. It took about 6 hours to film the whole thing. Was quite tired by the end.

Tempera Resist

Took a tempera resist workshop with Sandra Jones. at the Pine Shores Art Association.
I used goauche instead of tempera (not washable kind). When I went to wash off the ink, alot of the goauche washed off also. Others were having better success with the tempera paint. Either way, it was a fun technique and I plan to do more.

Pumpkin custard

Last weekend my husband transferred my files to a new computer. Took me a while to find the images I was going to use for the new giveaway and they still need some tweaking. So will try to get that started by the weekend.

Anyways, I thought that in the mean time I would post a pumpkin custard recipe. As some of you may know, my husband is diabetic and we are still trying to find foods that he likes and will help keep his numbers low

One that seems to work it this pumpkin custard.

1 can pumpkin
1 can evaporated milk
5 eggs
Approx amounts of the following ingredients
1/4 -1/3 cup Splenda (or blue agave syrup)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat eggs in a bowl. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into greased 8x8 glass pan. Bake 350 for 40-45 minutes or till inserted knife is clean.

I like this recipe because I dont have to get the measuring cups out.

I do let him use whipped cream, but just enough for a bit with each bite. It is not a smooth creamy texture like pumpkin pie is, but we have found that eggs keep his numbers down and he is okay with the taste. Decreasing the amount of eggs would make it smoother. I think that the normal proportion for pie custard would be more like 2 eggs and a little less milk.

Lucy the Elephant

Went down to Margate NJ to check out a few galleries the other day. Pat Johnson from the Sandpaper drove down there with me. We decided that we should stop and see Lucy the Elephant. While Pat grew up in South Jersey, she had never seen Lucy. She is big enough to go inside, but we decided it might feel a bit claustrophobic.

You approach Lucy from this position from the main street, Atlantic Ave. Note the "boo boo" on her tail.

This is a view of her from the ocean side. The cute little green house is the gift shop.

Susan Kathleen Black Workshop

Mid September, I was fortunate enough to go to the Susan Kathleen Black Workshop in Dubois WY.

While there were two instructor workshops which the artists could attend, many of us just went out in the area and did some plein air painting.

John Finley posed one day during the workshop. Yes, they do dress like this in Dubois.

I did touch up these paintings after I got home. I am going to have to train myself to add more white if I am going to continue to paint on these dark backgrounds.

We had the opportunity to go to the EA Ranch to paint. 8,000 acres and I decided to paint the bench outside the main house.

Susan K Black Workshop

I attended the Susan Kathleen Black Foundation workshop for artists Sept 15-20th. It was held in Dubois, WY.

I met a wonderful lady, Pat Jeffers and her equally as nice husband, Jack, who are from Montrose, Colorado. Pat is a basket weaver who makes these amazing baskets and wall hangings. Jack is a photographer. He wrote this short piece about the workshop and area. He took such nice photos, so much better than the ones I took. So I asked if I could post this.

Long Beach Island has become a popular place to get married. These folks had just gotten married at the lighthouse in Barnegat Light.

Dockside in Tuckerton, NJ

There is a plein air group that has formed comprised of a lot of members of the Pine Shores Art Association. Lori Bonnani has been organizing the paint outs each week. Lately we have been painting at the Dockside in Tuckerton, NJ.

There are some neat old houses in Tuckerton. This one was across the road from the Dockside. I still hae to work on the lights and darks. But overall, pretty happy that at least it is recognizable. :-)

The next week, I chose to paint behind the Dockside, along the river, where they have outdoor tables set up with umbrellas. That day, a group of kayakers had just returned from an outing and were outside eating. The area to the left was in shadow. I didnt feel like I captured the colors very well. But the most important lesson I learned was to paint the people first. As you can see, I did not finish getting my canvas covered as my "models" left before then!

Gavin Workshop update

The a few weeks ago I attended a two day workshop with Ellen Gavin at the Pine Shores Art Association. Here is the progress photo from that first session.

The following week, I made several corrections. Most of them to the background.

I was surprised at how much I could move the wet paint around using turpentine rather liberally.
